Queer, neurodivergent artist, inspired by the wild North Cornwall Coast.

Felix (they/them) is a painter, sculptor and print-maker living and working in North Cornwall.

From the youngest age that it is possible to express creativity, Felix has been a creative: fashioning creatures out of the tin foil left on the kitchen counter, carving faces out of lawn turf, creating “shows” along with their siblings and friends – and living, ultimately, in a creative world of their own.

As a student, Felix excelled in creative studies – from theater, to woodwork, ceramics and painting. Felix’s life is entangled with artistic practices, a continually evolving relationship between creativity and identity – but their formal training in artistic practices are as follows:

Formal Training

  • Art Foundation, Falmouth University, 2005-2006
  • Ceramics Apprenticeship, The Leach Pottery, 2006-2007
  • After a 10 year hiatus from creative education, during which Felix struggled with undiagnosed bi-polar disorder, Felix returned to Falmouth University to undertake their Fine Art Degree, which they completed with a 2:1 in 2023.

Over the last year, Felix’s diagnosis and treatment for bi-polar has unlocked a new way of working. In describing this evolution in their mental health, and their creative practice, they write:

“My creative process used to be entirely fuelled by manic episodes – and the process of making art was a tool I used to navigate those periods. Now, it’s a method of maintaining creative stability – it’s what makes my brain tick.

“Every piece of work is an exercise in meditation – I can’t meditate in a traditional way, but my work is a meditation on a subject. It changes how I think during that process – it’s knackering, but also euphoric. It’s a complete channeling of energy into something new.

“I do not have a neurotypical way of viewing the world, in how I work and how I think. I am not interested in creating an imitation of the world – but a description of how I view reality.”

In Spring 2024, Felix took on the lease of The Old Forge Gallery, Boscastle.

Exhibited in the gallery is Felix’s most recent work: they are currently primarily creating oil paintings of the surrounding coastline, metal birds out of local scrap metal, and lino prints displaying the land and sea in striking, monochrome style.

More About The Old Forge Gallery

The gallery is, like Felix, multifaceted. It’s an exhibition space both for Felix and for collaborative exhibitions. It’s a working studio for Felix, and you will often find them painting and printmaking, boilersuit on, jazz playing, in this beautiful old building. There are regular workshops and exhibitions at the gallery, hosted by Felix themselves or in collaboration with other local artists.
